MONMOUTH, Maine — A fifth-grade teacher at Monmouth Middle School faces child pornography charges as the result of a Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit investigation.

Christopher Brown, 56, was charged on Thursday with possession of sexually explicit material after police discovered several pornographic images on a pair of laptop computers on Brown’s property, according to state police Sgt. Glenn Lang of the computer crimes unit.

Lang said police were called to the school on Wednesday after some “odd photographs” of female students were discovered on a computer in a room often used by Brown. Lang said the photos were unusual in that they appeared to have been taken surreptitiously and had been cropped to show only the girls’ heads.

“It just seemed that something wasn’t right,” Lang said.

Brown later admitted to taking the photos and superimposing the heads onto images of other children, according to Lang. Lang said the charges against Brown did not stem from those “morphed” photos because they were not of nude children, although they were dressed in bathing suits and skirts.

The charges, Lang said, stemmed from about 45 other sexually explicit images of children that were found on laptops that had been hidden in a waterproof container in Brown’s yard.

After his arrest, Brown was released on bail, according to Lang. He said Brown had been placed on administrative leave from the school.
