Golf Hall to induct Plourd, Lano among class of six

POLAND SPRING — Six members of the Maine golf community will be inducted as the class of 2011 of the Maine Golf Hall of Fame at Poland Spring Golf Club on Sept. 15.

Helen Plourd of Rockland, Andrew Lano II of Portland, Wilfred Benoit of Norway, Lawrence Rowe of South Portland, Gregory Searle of Biddeford and Michael Verrier of Saco will all be inducted at a formal ceremony at 6 p.m. after a non shotgun scramble tournament and reception/social hour at 5 p.m.

Plourd has been an integral part of the development of the Women’s Maine State Golf Association as president, executive board member, rules committee member and ladies Tri-State team chairwoman. She won the ladies state senior championship twice and was a 20-time Rockland Golf Club ladies champion.

Benoit was a longtime golf pro at Poland Springs GC, Norway Country Club and Summit Springs GC. As an amateur, he won two father-son titles and he still plays golf at the age of 96.

Lano has been a PGA tour caddie since 1987. He has caddied for Michele Wie, D.J. Brigman, Kenny Perry, Jim Carter and Trip Kuehne at such events as The Masters and Ryder Cup competitions. He played at Deering High School of Portland and Western Kentucky University.

Rowe was the 1937 Maine Open champion and a longtime golf professional. He became the Purpoodock Club pro in 1925 and was architect of the original nine holes. He stayed there for 16 years before designing and building the Larry Rowe GC in South Portland (now South Portland Municipal GC).

Searle has been one of Maine’s premier golf course superintendents for more than 30 years. He’s also past president of the Maine Golf Course Superintendents Association and served on the United States Golf Association Green Committee.

Verrier has been a high school golf coach at Thornton Academy in Saco for 22 years. His teams have won three state titles, five SMAA league crowns and 13 divisional championships. He has been program director for the Tri-City Junior Golf program.
