Presenters to discuss opera at Rockport event

ROCKPORT, Maine — Helen and Bob Blakelock of Damariscotta Mills will explore “La Fille du Regiment” (The Daughter of the Regiment), PORTopera’s July festival opera, during an illustrated program 3-5 p.m. Sunday, June 12, in the recital hall at the Bay Chamber Community School, 18 Central Ave.

Music, history, biography, quantum leaps into supposition, gossip and trivia will keep the afternoon lively, lighthearted and informative. Helen will provide the commentary and Bob will create the audio-visual excerpts geared to entertain while previewing the opera and energizing the potential opera audience.

The Blakelocks have given opera programs at New England College in New Hampshire for many years. Helen has been a presenter at pre-opera luncheons and dinners for the Opera Company of Boston. She has been the featured speaker for Opera Guilds International, Boston Women’s Council, Belmont Woman’s Club and other civic and cultural organizations.

Founding President Jack Riddle, nationally recognized for his work on behalf of PORTopera, will provide an overview of the many activities and facets of PORTopera’s offerings. Warren Schubert, member of the board of both Bay Chamber and PORTopera, will make the introductions.

Light refreshments will be served, and a lucky attendee will win two tickets to the Saturday, July 30, performance of La Fille. Call Warren Schubert at 236-6126 for more information on this presentation.  This event is free and open to the public.

Ticket information for “La Fille du Regiment,” July 28-30, at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland is available at or by calling 842-0800.
