Controlled moose hunt lottery open for disabled veterans

AUGUSTA —The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management have announced the 2011 Disabled Veterans’ Controlled Moose Hunt Lottery.

MDIF&W has allocated 10 moose hunting permits to disabled veterans to participate in the controlled moose hunt in Aroostook County. The dates for the hunt are expected to be Sept. 14–23, and will occur on farm land in Aroostook County specified by the department.

Last year, disabled veterans who were awarded permits were 100 percent successful in getting a moose with the help of guides.

Dave Hentosh of Smoldering Lake Outfitters and Paul House of House in the Woods Military and Family Retreat in Lee and their friends will return this year as guides for the disabled veterans.

To qualify for the lottery, a Maine veteran must have the State of Maine Disabled Veterans Hunting License issued by MDIF&W.  All in-state applications will be placed in a lottery and the drawing for seven permits will take place on July 15. Three permits will be given to non-resident “Wounded Warriors” who will join Maine’s disabled veterans in this year’s disabled veterans’ moose hunt.

The application for the lottery are on the MDIF&W and Bureau of Veterans Services websites. Veterans who can not access the application online may call Maine Veterans’ Services at 207- 430-6035 to receive application by mail. All applications must be received by Maine Veterans’ Services no later than July 8.

A disabled veteran who receives a regular moose permit for the 2011 regular moose season is not eligible for this controlled moose hunt.

More information about the controlled moose hunt may be found by visiting MDIF&W’s website at www.mefishwildlife.com and selecting “2011 Aroostook County Controlled Moose Hunt.”
