The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Replicas of two of the ships credited for helping discover America are coming to Portland.

The Nina and the Pinta are due to spend several days in Portland at the end of June after spending time in Kittery.

The two vessels are replicas of the ships that Christopher Columbus sailed on his famous 1492 voyage from Spain to the New World.

The two ships were built in Brazil, the Nina in 1991, the Pinta in 2005.

Senior Capt. Morgan Sangar of the British Virgin Islands-based Columbus Foundation told the Portland Press Herald it has been a long time since the ships visited Maine.

The vessels will be open to the public for tours.
