BELFAST — Waldo County General Hospital oncology nurses Michelle Whitcomb and Marilyn Knowlton received $750 scholarships from the Maine Cancer Foundation to attend the Oncology Nurse Society Congress 2011 in Boston. The award will reimburse the nurses for some of the expenses of registering for the 36th annual conference and lodging costs for the four-day conference.
In announcing the scholarships, the executive director of the Maine Cancer Foundation urged the two to “bring back the knowledge you gain and share it with your fellow nurses through presentations, papers or in day-to-day interactions.”
The goal of the annual Congress is to offer interactive learning experiences and networking opportunities for oncology nurses. This includes discussions about
innovations in cancer care, current issues and trends in cancer care, ethical issues related
to cancer treatment and patient-nurse relationships, and how to support and sustain self-
care and rejuvenation.
The Oncology Nurse Society is an organization of more than 36,000 Registered Nurses
and other healthcare providers whose mission is “to promote excellence in oncology
nursing and quality cancer care.”
