Island Institute gives $98,300 to 75 students


ROCKLAND, Maine — The Island Institute awarded $98,300 to 75 students from Maine’s year-round island communities.

Since 1990, more than 725 awards totaling over $850,000 have helped island students attain their higher-education goals. This year’s awards ranged from $500 to $5,000.

Scholarship winners included: Shawn Chilles, John Morton and Keith Drury all of Vinalhaven and Emily Thomas of Islesboro.

Midcoast chorus to perform June 18

ROCKPORT, Maine — The Midcoast Community Chorus will perform 7 p.m. June 18 at the Strom Auditorium in Rockport. The concert “Planting Seeds,” will benefit Maine Farmland Trust.

PBMC honors volunteers

ROCKPORT, Maine — Last month, Penobscot Bay Medical Center recognized its volunteers at a luncheon.

Groups that were honored included Pen Bay’s gardening group, the Camden Garden Club and the Rockport Garden Club, the on-call chaplains and pastoral visitors, the board of trustees; the Pen Bay Stitchers who knit, and more.

Presidential Service Awards were presented to 48 volunteers, including nine Lifetime Achievement Awards to people who have contributed more than 4,000 hours during their volunteer careers.

Land trust to hold bird, fish, tree tour

UNION, Maine — The Georges River Land Trust will host a tour of local birds, fish and trees 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 14 at the Vose Library in Union.

Gail Presley and Peter Duffey, of the land trust, will discuss what lives in the St. George River watershed. This will include a tour of the river and its residents.
