AUGUSTA, Maine — A retired Marine general has been sworn into office as commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor.

Gov. Paul LePage administered the oath of office Friday to retired Lt. Gen. Robert J. Winglass of Bath after the Senate confirmed his nomination.

Winglass retired from the Marines in 1992 and served four years in the Maine House before joining IBM Corp.

Winglass takes over two months after LePage angered organized labor by ordering the removal of a mural depicting the state’s labor history from the Department of Labor building. LePage said the mural presented a one-sided account of history.
