FORT FAIRFIELD – Rowena J. Henderson, 91, wife of the late Lewin L. Henderson, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday morning, June 3, 2011, at a Mars Hill nursing facility, after an extended illness. She was born July 7, 1919, in California Settlement, New Brunswick, daughter of John and Nellie (Somers) Hamilton.
She attended school in California Settlement, New Brunswick, and was married to Lewin L. Henderson, May 1, 1943. A dedicated homemaker, Rowena also assisted local farmers seasonally and worked for a time at Aroostook Shoe, Presque Isle. Prior to her diminishing eyesight, Rowena greatly enjoyed bingo and knitting. She was an accomplished cook up until a few days prior to her death, and was known for her wonderful bread and chicken stew. She often listened to the Bible on tape and bestowed great wisdom upon her family.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Henderson was predeceased by her husband, Lewin, Feb. 17, 1973; one daughter, Leota M. Cyr, Feb. 19, 2000; one son, Burton E. Henderson, Oct. 4, 2009; one son-in-law, Darrell Doody, June 1, 2009; as well as numerous siblings. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Lewin and Barbara Henderson of Bentley, Mich., Benny and Linda Henderson of Cheshire, Conn., and Gary and Christine Henderson of Newburgh; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vaida Doody of Fort Fairfield, Wanetta and William Busse of Washburn, and Celia and Howard Huber of Black River, N.Y.; one son-in-law, Sterling Cyr of Presque Isle; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Henderson McKinnon of Fort Fairfield; 16 grandchildren, Lynn Henderson, John Henderson, Coleen Wilga, all of Michigan, Karen Milton of Washburn, Benjamin Henderson Jr. of Cheshire, Conn., Becky Hanna of Meridian, Conn., Amy Schmidt of Cheshire, Conn., Laura Pelkey of Caribou, Daniel Henderson of Carmel, Scott Hill of Florida, Jeff Hill of Newburgh, Misty Smith of Andover, New Brunswick, Billy Busse Jr. of Chapman, April Busse of Easton, Matthew Huber and Melissa Holland, both of New York; 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 6, with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held immediately after the interment service at Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Henderson to Carl Robert Dream Foundation, 304 North Caribou Road, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742.
