July Fourth fireworks

BANGOR, Maine — As in years past, the public is being asked support the fireworks display on the Fourth of July along the banks of the Penobscot River.

The Bangor Fourth of July Corp. is a nonprofit arm of Bangor area Kiwanis Clubs, which work to put on the city’s celebration. Tony Bernatche, corporation president, said the city of Bangor has contributed some $5,000 toward the 2011 display, to be provided by Central Maine Pyrotechnics of Hallowell. The goal is a show with 40 percent more fireworks than last year, he said.

To accomplish that, the corporation is soliciting local business owners and individuals to raise $25,000. Checks may be sent to Bangor Fourth of July Corp., P.O. Box 2712, Bangor, ME 04402-2712.

The Bangor Daily News will publish an update on Wednesdays in June showing the total donated and the amount yet to be raised.
