LEWISTON, Maine — It’s all over for the Lewiston Maineiacs hockey team.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team’s been sold to the league, ending the franchise’s existence. The decision was made during a conference call Tuesday, the day before the league’s annual meetings and draft.
Former Maineiacs majority owner Mark Just tells the Sun Journal of Lewiston that the sale is hard for him, but also a relief given the debts amassed by the team.
The league says it plans to mothball the franchise, dissolve the team and hold a dispersal draft for all 50 players on the team roster.
The decision comes after two unsuccessful attempts in the past two years to relocate the team and poor attendance by fans in the seasons following a 2007 league championship.
