ROCKPORT, Maine — Bay Chamber will present the Odeon Chamber Orchestra in it free spring concert at 7 p.m. Monday, June 6, in the Rockport Opera House. The Odeon Orchestras have served Midcoast musicians since 2000, evolving from a single ensemble to four ensembles and a chamber music program for youth and adults.

The Odeon Chamber Orchestra works without a conductor, under the direction of Gilda Joffe and Michael Reynolds. They will perform the “Little Suite” by Carl Nielsen; “Tango No. 2 – Cantengue” by Astor Piazzolla, featuring soloist Sophie Davis, of Waldoboro; and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Also on Monday’s program is the Kraeftig Quartet, composed of Fiona Boyd, violin, Teal Vickery, viola, Duncan Hall, cello, and Sam McKenna, piano, playing a chamber work by Faure.

The Chamber Orchestra had a unique opportunity this month when they had a master class with Argentinean bandoneonist Hector Del Curto and his quartet.  He brought to life the tango music of Astor Piazzolla, a contemporary composer who revolutionized traditional tango music by incorporating elements of jazz and classical music.

The orchestra is starting a beginning strings ensemble and a full symphonic orchestra.

This fall the Odeon Symphony Orchestra will be offered for all instruments at the intermediate level. Placement in the Odeon Junior, Symphony and Chamber Orchestras is by audition.  These auditions are for placement in the fall orchestras, which will begin rehearsals on Sept. 12.  To audition, come to the Rockport Opera House at 3:30-5:30 p.m Tuesday, June 7.  A beginning strings ensemble will be offered this summer, and no audition is necessary.
