Wacky Wednesday will have an interesting new twist when the popular entry-level race program starts Season 13 on Wednesday night at 7 at Hermon’s Speedway 95.

Speedway 95 co-owner Del Merritt said they will divide their Small Enduro (four-cylinder) class into two divisions: A and B, and he won’t inform the B group which direction they will drive in until they go onto the track. They won’t know ahead of time.

“It helps build the field of cars. This will take the cheating out of it and give more people a chance to win, especially the people who can’t put a lot of money into it,” said Merritt. “A lot of the drivers seem to enjoy that while some feel racy and don’t want to do it.

“But the fans love it. It’s different,” added Merritt. “We’ll see how it does.”

Stock car races are run counter-clockwise and drivers set their cars up to run that way.

However, if track officials feel drivers are illegally doctoring their cars, the best deterrent is to force them to run clock-wise because it would negate the value of doctoring the cars.

Wacky Wednesday will have the same classes as a year ago.

“The biggest field (of cars) is the Small Enduros,” said Merritt.

The other classes will be the Large Enduros (6- or 8-cylinder cars), Ladies, Teens (Stars of Tomorrow) and Trucks (large pickup trucks).

Merritt is hoping to get respectable car counts.

He said one thing that has had a negative impact on the car counts in recent years is the demand for parts and metal.

“The thing that really hurts us is a lot of old cars get crushed up because people can get $250-$300 for their old cars,” said Merritt. “I’m not sure what the future is.”

He said they will try to keep the shows to “to 2 1/2 hours.

“In the middle of the week, you want to keep the program down (time-wise),” said Merritt. “You’d like to get done by 9:00 or 9:30 at the latest.”
