BANGOR – Arthur A. Sawyer Jr., 70, died May 26, 2011, at a Bangor health care center, after a long illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1940, in Brewer, the son of Arthur A. and Norma A. (Dow) Sawyer.

Arthur grew up at Pushaw Lake and was a 1959 graduate of Orono High School. He worked for the state of Maine Department of Agriculture and retired after 20 years. He was an avid sports fan, competitive cribbage player and enjoyed collecting antique automobiles. Arthur was a member of Bangor Elks Lodge No. 244 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Post No. 3177, Brewer.

He is survived by one sister, Tamra Philbrook and her husband, Glenn, of Portland; one nephew, Travis Philbrook of Portland; one niece, Tuesday Philbrook of Scarborough; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Louanna Sawyer, in 1990; and by a daughter, Kimberly Sawyer. Arthur was a friend to all and his family thanks his lifelong special friend, Jeff McKenny of Bangor.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 6, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, where he will be buried with his family. Arrangements by Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Messages and condolences may be made to his family at
