Maine legal community eagerly awaits new US District Court judge

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s legal community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the state’s next federal judge.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy Torresen is President Barack Obama’s pick for a seat on the U.S. District Court in Maine.

Her nomination was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, clearing the way for a vote by the full Senate.

Torresen is based in Bangor.

Defense lawyers and former prosecutors say Torresen is a hard-working lawyer who is also fair and compassionate.

The Portland Press Herald says Torresen would fill the seat held by Judge D. Brock Hornby, who went on senior status last year but is still handling a full caseload.

If confirmed, Torresen would become Maine’s first female federal judge.
