PORTLAND, Maine — The mayor of the Maine city of Portland says he hopes to become the first mayor chosen directly by voters in almost 90 years.

Portland Ceremonial mayor Nick Mavadones will launch his candidacy on Tuesday.

Mavadones was chosen by the council for the largely ceremonial post of mayor in December.

Almost nine decades ago Portland abolished the elected post of mayor. Since then, the post has rotated among nine members of the City Council.

Last year city voters approved changing the way the mayor is chosen and giving the post additional responsibility. The first election will be held November.
