Hermon High honor parts announced

HERMON — Principal Brian M. Walsh of Hermon High School has announced the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2011. Commencement ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Bangor Auditorium.

Alexandra Jordan Lynds, daughter of Wendy and Kevin Lynds of Hermon, has been named valedictorian of her class. She will attend Bowdoin College and likely study psychology.

Lynds played flute in the concert band and marching band for four years, was a four-year member of the HHS chapter of Key Club, serving as president in her senior year, a four-year member of student council, a class officer for three years, a member of the Hermon chapter of the National Honor Society, and participated in the high school musical productions of “Grease” and “Footloose.”

She received the Foreign Language Association of Maine Award, was an American Association of Teaching French National Award winner and was on the honor roll all four years. She received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Award, and was named student of the month during both her freshman and junior years. She also volunteers as a canine care assistant at the Bangor Humane Society.

Alexa Paige Small, daughter of Paula Small of Hermon and George Small of Gorham, has been named salutatorian of her class. She will attend Virginia Tech and major in psychology.

Small was a four-year member of the HHS chapter of Key Club and of the French club, serving as secretary for two years, a member of the Hermon chapter of the National Honor Society, serving as secretary and treasurer, and participated as a student facilitator of Freshman Orientation for the past three years.

She received the Williams College Book Award in her junior year, and received Academic Achievement Awards in English, French, chemistry, civics, U.S. history, current issues, honors algebra, pre-calculus, conflict resolution, and music appreciation. She has volunteered with the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis on several projects, as well as at the Youth Leaders Club Talent and Interest Showcase.
