BERRY TOWNSHIP, Maine — A 17-year-old boy from Jonesboro was injured Sunday morning in an ATV accident on the ITS 19 trail.

According to Joe Gardner of the Maine Warden Service, the teenager was traveling with a group of ATVs on the trail when he attempted to pass another vehicle. The front wheel of his ATV struck the rear wheel of another vehicle which caused it to veer off the dirt road where it struck a tree.

The boy was thrown from the ATV, but received only minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident as was the other teen driving the second ATV.

“It’s the law that anyone under 18 must wear a helmet, and, in this case, it certainly made things a whole lot better,” Gardner said. “The injuries could have been a whole lot worse if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet.”

The boy did complain of pain and was being taken ambulance to Downeast Community Hospital in Machias to be checked.

Gardner was assisted at the scene by Ranger Ryan Maker of the Maine Forest Service.
