PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine supreme court justice and a lawyer with a Portland law firm are being nominated to fill an upcoming vacancy on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree announced Friday that they will forward the names of Justice Jon Levy and lawyer William Kayatta Jr. to President Barack Obama for consideration to fill the impending vacancy on the court. The president will send one name to the Senate for confirmation to replace Judge Kermit Lipez, who is taking active retired status by the end of the year.

Levy has served on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court since 2002. Kayatta is a partner with the law firm Pierce Atwood.
