CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Sugarloaf Golf Club will kick off its 26th season on Friday.
Earlier this spring Sugarloaf was honored in Golf Digest’s 2011 course rankings as Maine’s No. 1 golf course, the 25th time it has earned that distinction, according to a press release from Ethan Austin, Sugarloaf’s communications manager.
Despite a long, snowy winter that provided the Sugarloaf ski resort with its second latest closing date in history, the recent mild and wet weather allowed the golf course to open as scheduled.
“Winters in the mountains can be challenging, but we have a talented crew here at Sugarloaf and they were able to get the course into great shape in time for our Memorial Day weekend opening,” Sugarloaf’s head golf pro Steve Niezgoda said.
This season, the club has a new fleet of electric golf carts, which will be quieter and more environmentally friendly, making for a more enjoyable experience, according to Austin. Golfers will also notice improvements to Sugarloaf’s fifth hole, which will increase player friendliness on what has historically been one of the most difficult holes on the course.
