St. Joe’s, USM players gain All-American honors


Saint Joseph’s College senior first baseman Alyssa Dunn has garnered College Sports Information Directors of America/Capital One Softball Academic All-America second-team honors.

Dunn, a pre-medicine major and four-year starter for the Monks’ softball program, is the first individual in SJC athletics history to receive an Academic All-America accolade, according to a press release from the school.
In order to be considered for the honor, athletes must initially earn first-team academic All-District honors.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA. of 3.30, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings and be nominated by the school’s sports information director.

Dunn was listed on the Academic All-District Team three times during her career.

A two-sport athlete and four-year starter for the SJC field hockey and softball programs, Dunn has played in 241 athletic contests in her collegiate career.

USM’s Eaton gains All-America honor

Senior first baseman Mike Eaton of the University of Southern Maine baseball team added another postseason award Wednesday when he was named to the D3baseball.com All-America second team.

Eaton was among the 63 players named to the D3baseball.com All-America teams for the 2011 season.

Eaton is the first USM player recognized by D3baseball.com since outfielder Anthony D’Alfonso (second team) and shortstop Chris Burleson (honorable mention) were honored in 2009. The D3baseball.com All-America teams are composed of players nominated by sports information directors and head coaches and selected by a panel of sports information directors and the D3baseball.com staff.

 A three-time All-Little East Conference selection, Eaton had a stellar senior season batting .426 (69 for 162) with 54 runs scored, 18 doubles, three triples, a career-high 12 home runs, 50 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
