PROSPECT, Maine — The large, 148-year-old brick oven at the Fort Knox State Historic Site will be fired up this weekend.
The oven, which was put back into service last summer for the first time since 1898, will be in service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29. Volunteers will bake items and offer samples to fort visitors during the day. In addition, interested visitors also can bring something from home to be baked in the fort oven.
The Fort Knox “bake house” was built as a large brick dome 15 feet deep, 10 feet wide and 19 inches high in the center. It is capable of baking 400 loaves of bread at one time.
