AUGUSTA — The 10th Annual Maine Lobster Ride & Roll, one of the more beautiful rides in the country, will return to Rockland July 23.

Sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, the ride will begin and end at Oceanside High School (formerly Rockland High School), with staggered start times beginning at 8 a.m.

The ride draws more than 700 cyclists from all over the United States, several Canadian provinces and as far away as New Zealand. Riders come for the scenery, camaraderie and fresh lobster rolls. The ride even has its own queen, longtime volunteer Maggie Warren.  Dressed in her royal red lobster claw headband and sparkly tiara, she will greet returning cyclists by cheering, banging a meditation bowl and ringing a cowbell, according to a press release from the coalition.

Participants may choose from four distance options — 16, 30, 50 and 100 miles.  “Outdoor Magazine” has listed the Maine Lobster Ride as one of the top centuries in the country because of the beautiful course along country roads past lakes, harbors and lighthouses. All routes have rest stops and support vehicles. Cyclists gather at the high school for a lobster roll lunch (hotdogs, tuna and veggie options also are available) and a live broadcast of the Tour de France.

Pre-registration rates for the Maine Lobster Ride & Roll are $85, with a $20 discount for coalition members. Children ages 12-17 pay $25, and those under 12 ride free. Participants will receive Maine Lobster Ride socks. For online registration, a video about the ride and more information, visit www.BikeMaine.org or call (207) 623-4511.

The Maine Lobster Ride & Roll raises money for the Bicycle Coalition, a statewide organization that teaches bicycle safety and works to improve bicycling conditions. The Bicycle Coalition has helped Maine become the second most bicycle-friendly state in the country, according to the League of American Bicyclists. Maine also has won national recognition for its Safe Routes to School program, run by the Bicycle Coalition and MaineDOT.

Major sponsors of the 10th Annual Maine Lobster Ride are L.L. Bean, Hannaford and the Maine Lobster Festival.  Other sponsors include ReVision Energy, K.J. Edward Knight, Auclair Cycle & Ski, DeLorme, Bikesenjava and Maine Sport Outfitters.
