BELFAST — Award-winning children’s author Mary Morton Cowan will present an illustrated talk to the Belfast Rotary Club at noon Wednesday, June 1, about her most recent book, “Captain Mac: The Life of Donald Baxter,” the adventurous life story of a man who explored and researched the eastern Arctic and subarctic for nearly 50 years, with many expeditions taking place aboard his own Arctic schooner, Bowdoin.
“Captain Mac” is the winner of the 2010 National Outdoor Book Award (children’s category), a John Burroughs Award for an outstanding natural history book, an Honor Book with the Society of School Librarians International. It is listed on the Bank Street College Best Children’s Books of the Year, 2011 edition, and is recommended by the National Science Teachers Association.
The Belfast Rotary Club meets at noon Wednesdays at the Waldo County Shrine Club. The public is invited to attend. The cost of lunch is $10. There is no cost to hear the speaker.
Irish music concert
ROCKLAND — The Sail, Power and Steam Museum will host a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the museum. Singer and musician Gabriel Donohue, who specializes in Irish music, will perform a broad range of material from serious Celtic instrumental music to rock and Broadway highlights. Donohue has played the dance halls of Dublin, the East Wing of the White house, the commons at Yale New Haven, the Irish pubs of Manhattan and even London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Donohue will be joined by Chris Stevens and Marian Makins. The concert will feature sea songs, war songs and bawdy songs, as well as the fiddle music of Ireland.

Film, duscussion series
ROCKLAND — Rockland Public Library will begin a four-week film and discussion series on “Joan of Arcadia” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 16, 23 and 30, at the library. Four episodes of “Joan of Arcadia” will be screened and discussed, with Bill Halpin and Saskia Huising leading discussion. Use of episodes are courtesy of CBS Broadcasting Inc. Admission is free.
Adult ed art celebrated
ROCKPORT — Five Town CSD Adult Ed celebrated another year of arts and crafts classes with its annual Art Show on May 10. Nearly 100 pieces of artwork were displayed by students and instructors, including paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor, steel sculpture, pottery, rugs, jewelry and collage.
