Waldo Humane Society offers free rabies clinic


MONROE, Maine — A free rabies vaccine clinic, sponsored by Waldo County Humane Society, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Monroe Fire Station at 8 Swanlake Avenue in Monroe. Dr. Sarah Tomalty from Little River Veterinary Hospital will be the attending Veterinarian.

The rabies shot will be free to animals residing in Waldo County. Pets from other counties are welcome to come for their shots for a small fee. Donations of any size would be gratefully accepted.

Donations of cat or dog food for Miss Millie’s Cupboard, the Frankfort based food pantry for domestic companion animals, as well as any monetary donations would be gratefully accepted.

Charlotte to honor veterans at Round Pond Cemetery

CHARLOTTE, Maine — The town of Charlotte will honor their veterans at 8:15 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Round Pond Cemetery. The town will honor Memorial Day with an honor guard participating, as well as a small choir to sing the traditional song “The Boys in Blue” and to lead in the singing of a few patriotic songs. The honor roll of deceased veterans will be read, and Taps will be played. The service also includes a procession through the cemetery, led by a flag bearer, during which the children lay a hemlock wreath on each veteran’s grave. The wreaths will have been made by school children the previous week, using brush that Mrs Spearin’s class collected earlier. For more information, call Eileen at 454-8825.

Charlotte fire and rescue to hold yard, food sale

CHARLOTTE, Maine — The Charlotte Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and Auxiliary will hold its annual Yard and Food Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Charlotte Fire Station at 1100 Ayers Junction Road (Route 214) in Charlotte. There are always new surprises in the yard sale. Items to add to the offerings for sale are still being accepted by calling Eileen Clark at 454-8825. The food sale will be loaded with the results of the community’s generous and talented bakers and cooks. Lunch items will be served during the event. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Charlotte Fire and Rescue Department.

‘Postcards from Vacationland’ a one-woman show

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — “Postcards From Vacationland,” a one-woman exhibit from Bangor artist Diana Young, will host a special reception from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 3,  at Gold/Smith Gallery, 41 Commercial St. in Boothbay Harbor. Walk for Life raises $30,000 to support cancer center

ADDISON, Maine — The 11th annual Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center’s Walk for Life held last Saturday raised more than $30,000, Michael Reisman, executive director of the Beth Wright Center in Ellsworth  reported this week.

The annual walk benefits the center, whose mission is to offer hope, knowledge, and support for people living with cancer and to their families and friends. All programs and services are free of charge, so a successful Walk for Life is essential for the Beth C. Wright Center to meet its program expenses, Reisman said.

Downeast Coastal Conservancy announces June events

MACHIAS, Maine — The Downeast Coastal Conservancy has set a series of events for June. They include the Whiting Plant Sale, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 4, at the Whiting Town Office. South Addison Island Cleanup Day, 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Tibbett and Marsh Islands. Participants must arrange their own water transportation to Tibbett Island (kayak, canoe, or small boat) from the South Addison Town Beach located at the end of Mooseneck Road or contact the Program Coordinator to reserve a spot on one of the larger boats. Grilled chicken featured at early fourth celebration

CHERRYFIELD, Maine — Cherryfield will hold its 4th of July celebration on Saturday, June 25. The Narraguagus Snowmobile Club will have a food concession on Park Street starting at 11:30 a.m. until the food is gone. The menu will consist of grilled chicken, potato salad and blueberry pie. Mark your calendar and plan to have a grilled chicken dinner on June 25.

Cobscook Learning Center offering music lessons

TRESCOTT, Maine — The Cobscook Community Learning Center will be offering a variety of music lessons for all ages with Alan Cook.

The center is accepting students for stringed fretted instruments, including guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, autoharp, drums (pad and/or kit), beginning banjo and beginning piano. There are openings at various times on Thursdays. If interested, please contact the center at 733-2233 for tuition information and to register. If anyone wishes a lesson on an instrument not listed, contact the center for arrangements.

Summer art camp to focus on insects

TRESCOTT, Maine — The Cobscook Community Learning Center will host a summer art camp for students ages 5 to 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, July 11 -15.

Roberta Lichtenger, an artist who teaches at Bay Ridge Elementary, will lead the camp. The theme is insects.

Kids must bring lunch, snacks and beverages each day. The cost of the week-long session is $25 to $175 based on a sliding scale. Supervised time may be arranged for students arriving early or staying late for an additional $5 per hour.

Parents or others providing transportation for camp participants may spend time at the center using the hiking trails, computer lab, pottery studio or other activities. Call the the center at 733-2233 for registration materials. The art camp will be limited to 16 students.

Machias Food Pantry to hold yard sale benefit

MACHIAS, Maine — A yard sale to benefit the Machias Food Pantry will be held 8-10 a.m. Friday, June 3 at Centre Street Congregational Church, 9 Center St. in Machias.

Marionette show part of Lupine Festival on Deer Isle

STONINGTON, Maine — The Island Community Center announced that it will sponsor a performance of “Dan Grady’s Marvelous Marionette Medley” at noon Saturday, June 18, at the Island Community Center in Stonington in conjunction with the Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce annual Lupine Festival events.

The show is a fast-paced, stringed puppet production comprised of routines that have that special something sure to tantalize, captivate, enchant and delight all those who attend.
