UMS board OKs tuition hike at Maine universities

The Associated Press

BANGOR, Maine — Maine university students on average would pay 4.3 percent higher tuition rates the coming school year under a proposal adopted Monday by University of Maine System trustees.

The board of trustees voted Monday on the system’s 2011-2012 operating budget. The budget includes the proposed tuition increase, which is a weighted average of rates at all seven universities.

Chancellor Richard Pattenaude said the tuition increase is the lowest in-state increase since 2002, when tuition went up 4.2 percent on average.

Pattenaude said trustees directed the university system to minimize tuition increases as much as possible in these challenging economic times.
