Developers of a casino in Oxford County have chosen two Bangor-area construction firms to head up the project.
Black Bear said they expect a groundbreaking announcement soon and an opening date early next year.
Voters approved the casino last November. Black Bear Realty said in the release that its bid process gave Maine construction companies first preference.
Cianbro Chairman and CEO Pete Vigue noted in the release that unemployment in Oxford County has been around 10 percent. In April, the unemployment rate in Oxford County was 10.8 percent, compared to 7.9 percent statewide and 8.7 percent nationwide.
“Not only will our construction activities bring immediate jobs and spending to this region, but hundreds of permanent positions will be created here once the facility is operational,” said Vigue.
Herb R. Sargent, president of Sargent Corp., said that there has been minimal commercial investment in rural Maine.
“We’re proud to be a part of a project that will bring not only good, temporary construction jobs, but also good permanent jobs as well,” he said.
