BREWER, Maine — A fire that appears to have begun in the kitchen left a one-story home on Park Avenue West with significant damage Sunday afternoon.

Units from the Brewer, Bangor, Holden and Orrington fire departments responded to the fire or covered for Brewer.

The home at 35 Park Avenue West is owned by Alan King and wife, Sonja, but no one was home at the time of the fire. A neighbor noticed smoke and called 911 around 5:30 p.m.

Captain Brent Melvin of the Brewer Fire Department said firemen arrived on the scene in three minutes and had the fire under control and knocked down in about 10 minutes.

Melvin said the fire appears to be accidental and may have begun on the stove in the kitchen.

The kitchen is a total loss. There is significant smoke and heat damage all through the yellow house with brown trim, but it wasn’t a total loss.

Melvin said there were some salvageable possessions, furniture pieces and rooms. An adjacent two-car garage and a vehicle in the driveway appeared to have no damage from the fire.
