Elena Lozada of Portland.

PORTLAND, Maine — The mother of a Maine woman whose body was dumped in the woods of Waldo County says her daughter’s body had been set afire before being left behind.

Carrie Cronkite says police told her the man who claims her daughter died of a drug overdose burned her body, which was found in Northport. Cronkite says she believes Nathaniel Pete Mincher of Saco set the fire to try to conceal evidence of a crime.

Police say Mincher informed them of Elena Lozada’s death in February, but her body wasn’t located until April.

The Portland Press Herald says Mincher declined to say whether he burned the body.

Cronkite questions why Mincher didn’t call 911 or try to help her daughter. For now, Mincher hasn’t been charged, and the case remains under investigation.
