Water main break closes federal building in Bangor

By Eric Russell, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A water main break on Harlow Street in downtown Bangor that forced the closure of the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building on Friday has been repaired.

“We’ve been told that the building will reopen on Monday and that it will be business as usual,” said Kevin Kelley, spokesman for Sen. Susan Collins, whose Bangor office is located in the building.

The break happened sometime after the building closed on Thursday, and crews from the Bangor Water District went to the area early Friday morning to address the problem. Officials said no other businesses were affected by the break.

The federal building, which houses U.S. District Court, the local offices of the Social Security Administration and other federal agencies, was closed all day Friday, according to the court clerk’s office.

BDN writer Dawn Gagnon contributed to this report.
