After 15 years, film critic Christopher Smith is leaving the Bangor Daily News as he pursues other aspects of his promising writing career.

Last year, Smith published his first book, best-selling thriller “Fifth Avenue.” Since then, he has signed a contract to write a trilogy of novellas under the name C.R. Smith, including “Bullied,” which was released on Amazon.com last month.

“I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of my time at the News – it literally changed my life and made me a better writer,” Smith wrote earlier this week in his letter of resignation. “I’m grateful to have had such an excellent experience, great support and a long run. I only could have found that at my hometown paper.”

He began the novel while attending the University of Maine for degrees in English and business, but his priorities shifted when he began writing movie critiques and managing electronic communications at the University of Maine. This year, with a push from his father, he decided to return to the novel to publish during the e-book craze.

Over the last 15 years, Smith has reviewed more than 4,000 movies, including about 2,500 that he reviewed on television as a film critic for WLBZ/WCSH and nationally on E! Entertainment Daily.

Smith’s blog, Week in Rewind, which has an international following, will remain online until sometime this summer, but a blog containing his latest endeavors can be found at www.christophersmithbooks.com/.

While we will miss Smith’s quick wit, dedication, and candid movie reviews, we wish him the best of luck and are proud to have had him as part of the BDN family for so many years.

At this time, we will not be replacing Smith with another critic, but instead will be focusing our efforts on improved coverage of local film endeavors and events as we continue to provide coverage of many of the big blockbusters.
