Troop greeters  to welcome public on Armed Forces Day

BANGOR — The Maine Troop Greeters invite the public to join them 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the troop greeter room on the second floor of Bangor International Airport to celebrate their eight years of troop greeting at BGR and American heroes from all branches of the military on Armed Forces Day.

“We are proud to announce that May 2011 marks eight years of troop greeting at Bangor International Airport where close to 6,000 flights, carrying 1.5 million troops and 300 service dogs, have been met. This is our third annual open house, traditionally held in the month of May. With Armed Forces Day on the 21st, the greeters felt that combining the two celebrations was a tribute to all our armed forces and befitting the mission of the Maine Troop Greeter organization,” MTG officials said.

That mission is: “to express the nation’s (and our) gratitude and appreciation to the troops, for those going overseas for a safe return and for those returning for a joyful homecoming and to make their (hopefully brief) stay in Bangor as comfortable and pleasant as possible.”

The program on May 21 has been tailored to honor all members of the armed forces and to celebrate the troop greeting program.

The formal program will start at 2 p.m. with the Presentation of Colors by the Marine Corps League, then the national anthem sung by Maine-ly Music Barbershop Chorus.

Speakers will include U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, Maj. Gen. John Libby, adjutant general of the Maine National Guard; and first lady Ann LePage. Music throughout the celebration will be performed by the 195th Army Band.

The Maine Troop Greeters want to share their greeting experiences with the public while they celebrate our American heroes. All are welcome.
