Organizers hope nautical yard sale will help keep Belfast boating program afloat

BELFAST, Maine — The nonprofit group Come Boating! has been providing area residents access to the water for more than a decade.

On summer days, the group’s two 32-foot Cornish pilot gigs and one sailboat ply the waters of Belfast Bay, carrying folks who are enjoying the free opportunity to get exercise, skills, fresh air and views.

This coming Saturday, Come Boating! will try something a little different — its first-ever nautical yard sale, with the proceeds used to keep the program going. The yard sale will be held in conjunction with its annual Launch Day, held at the waterfront from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We operate on a shoestring and don’t have much money in excess,” volunteer Ellen Sinclair said Monday. “It’s just to try to keep us afloat.”

Among the items to be sold are several boats, including a Walker Bay 8 with sailing rig and oars, a fiberglass Middlepath Skua 16-foot rowing boat with trailer, and a Force Five sailboat. There also will be life jackets, books, art and collectibles available. The organization is continuing to collect nautical paraphernalia to be added to the mix.

Launch Day activities have been successful, Sinclair said, with people going out to row in the gigs, to learn about the programs and to enjoy a barbecue. Come Boating! members hope  that the yard sale also will be a hit for Belfast.

“It’s kind of an experiment,” she said, but she’s optimistic. “Yard sales seem to be the way to go now.”

If anyone has items to donate to the cause, it’s not too late. Those interested should call Jim at 338-0136 for dropoff and pickup arrangements by Friday, May 20.

Launch Day activities will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, May 21, at the Come Boating! boat shed near the Belfast Public Landing. There is no charge for the barbecue.

The All Things Nautical yard sale will take place near the boat shed 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

The rain date for Launch Day and the nautical yard sale will be Sunday, May 22.
