PORTLAND, Maine — The city of Portland has reinstalled a $3,500 “Welcome to Portland” sign that was stolen last December.

City officials say the 5-by-8 sign disappeared from the intersection of the Fore River Parkway and West Commercial Street, where it’s seen by thousands of visitors and commuters each day.

The signed was retrieved by the Gorham Police Department after a tip that it had been tossed in the woods. Portland police are still investigating the theft.
