UNITY, Maine — A scientist whose areas of focus include climate change and sustainability has been hired to become the next president of Unity College.

The college announced Thursday that 57-year-old Stephen Mulkey will take over in July for Mitchell Thomashow, who is stepping down after five years on the job.

Mulkey is the director of the environmental science program at the University of Idaho. He said he’s impressed with Unity’s focus on climate change and its leadership on sustainability issues.

Unity is an environmental studies college with about 560 students located in the central Maine town of Unity.
