Baxter Park delays most campground, road openings

MILLINOCKET, Maine — Baxter State Park officials have postponed the opening of most park campgrounds and roads until at least Friday, May 20.

Typically, the park opens most campgrounds on May 15, but the cold, wet spring weather has failed to melt snow and thaw roads to allow vehicle traffic.

Limited sections of the Park Tote Road will open to public traffic on May 14. The Tote Road will be open from Togue Pond Gate to Abol Beach and the base of Abol Hill on the southern end of the park.

On the northern end of the park, the Tote Road will be open from Matagamon Gate to Trout Brook Crossing. The South Branch Pond Road also will be open and camping will be available at South Branch Pond Campground on May 15.

Katahdin-access hiking trails with trailheads at Roaring Brook, Katahdin Stream and Abol Campgrounds remain closed. Traveler-Loop trails also remain closed.

More than 80 inches of snow accumulated this winter at the highest backcountry campground, Chimney Pond. At an elevation of 2,914 feet, Chimney Pond Campground normally opens on June 1, but the late spring conditions may delay that opening as well.

Hikers or campers headed to the park should check online at or call park headquarters at 207-723-5140 for current information on camping and trail conditions.
