BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Vermont man was charged with illegal possession of hydrocodone Tuesday afternoon after an inspector at the Brunswick post office intercepted a package and alerted the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Harold Lanphere, 32, was arrested at the Knights Inn on Pleasant Street, where he was staying, supervisor Jim Pease of the midcoast office of the MDEA said today.

“The postal inspector intercepted a package shipped to him from Vermont with 12 hydrocodone pills in it, and he consented to a search of the package,” Pease said.

The pills had not been prescribed to Lanphere, Pease said, and Lanphere was charged with Class C possession of hydrocodone at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Pease confirmed that a canine unit and officer from the Topsham Police Department assisted with the investigation, but he declined to say what prompted officers to call for a dog or what prompted an investigation of the package.
