WASHINGTON, Maine —  A Washington man set his camp on fire and hanged himself Tuesday night, police reported Wednesday morning.

Police say Robert Medeika, 37, burned his summer camp on Medieka Lane and tried to light his mother’s nearby home on fire. The camp was destroyed, but his mother’s home remained intact.

As firefighters fought the blaze, Washington Assistant Fire Chief Phil Meunier discovered Medieka’s body hanging from a ridge pole in the man’s garage.

Medeika had been charged with several crimes in 2009 after making pipe bombs and scattering them about his property, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The State Police bomb squad was called Tuesday night as a precaution, but nothing was found.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire.

The event comes after another apparent arson suicide in neighboring Waldo County last week.
