U.S. Cellular to offer 4G in Portland, Bangor by year’s end

BANGOR, Maine — U.S. Cellular has announced it will offer high-speed 4G LTE services and 4G-enabled devices in more than two dozen of its markets — including Bangor and Portland — by the end of 2011.

U.S. Cellular customers with 4G LTE devices and service will experience significantly faster data speeds when browsing the web, accessing e-mail, playing games and viewing and streaming videos, according to a news release.

Besides the Bangor and Portland markets, the initial rollout of the 4G service also is planned for selected cities in Iowa, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma.

The rollout builds on the 3G data services that U.S. Cellular customers already use on the carrier’s nationwide network. More details on the next phases of the company’s 4G LTE deployment will be announced at a later date.
