ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine issued tips for its 209th commencement Saturday at Alfond Arena.
Traffic, especially coming from the south, is expected to be unusually heavy, according to Joe Carr, spokesman for UMaine. Those traveling to Orono for either the 10 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. sessions are asked to allow a good deal of extra time and plan on arriving early.
Doors at the arena will open at 8 a.m.
Backpacks and strollers are not allowed in the arena, according to UMaine police. The commencement floor level is not accessible by spectators for any purpose, including photos.
Shuttle buses will provide transportation to the arena from the Steam Plant parking lot, the Belgrade parking lot, the Collins Center for the Arts parking lot and the Hilltop parking lot. The Black Bear shuttle bus will run on its normal pattern from downtown Orono through campus, providing another way to get to Alfond Arena.
The ceremonies will be broadcast on video monitors in Memorial Gym in the event that Alfond Arena reaches its legally allowable capacity.
Visitors are asked to note that the University of Maine is a tobacco-free campus.
