PORTLAND, Maine — The first woman nominated for a federal judgeship in Maine has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that she would focus on facts and higher-court precedents if confirmed as a judge.

Nancy Torresen was one of five federal judge nominees who appeared Wednesday before the committee in Washington.

The Portland Press Herald says if Torresen’s nomination is approved by the committee, the next step will be a confirmation vote by the Senate.

Torresen is an assistant U.S. attorney and a former state assistant attorney general. Her husband, Jay McCloskey, was once the U.S. attorney in Maine.

Torresen has the support of Maine’s two U.S. senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.
