PRESQUE ISLE — Samantha M. White was a student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle studying business and art when another student asked her to photograph some events that were taking place on campus.

The invitation awakened a passion in the Bradford native that has blossomed into a successful, full-time photography business.

White is the force behind Samantha Marie Photography, a Presque Isle-based business that the 23-year-old started in 2008. Since those first days taking photographs of concerts, performances and artistic events at UMPI, White has amassed a significant client list and preserved emotions and memories for people across the state.

“I didn’t really start getting interested in photography until I was a freshman in high school,” White, who attended Central High School in Corinth, said during a recent interview. “But I didn’t think about pursuing it as a career until that first incident at UMPI. I ended up doing a lot more photography while I was in college, and eventually decided that photography was where I was headed with my life.”

White, who left UMPI after two years to pursue her craft, is completely self-taught. She got a job photographing a wedding soon after leaving college, and word of her talent spread.

“My career just sort of blossomed after that,” she said. “I started out with weddings and then branched out to take family and senior portraits, newborn profiles and whatever else people request. I am open to try new things and I enjoy new experiences.”

White doesn’t operate out of a studio, so she spends a lot of time traveling to clients’ homes, wedding locations and natural studios.

“If you are a photographer in Aroostook County, you really don’t need a studio,” said White. “There are just so many locations across the region that are the perfect backdrop for a photograph. I take a lot of pictures at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle and in the parks around Presque Isle.”

Snapshots of White’s work show families posing in lush fields surrounded by resplendent fall foliage and large hands cradling tiny babies. In others, a toddler in a sea of pink-and-purple fabric chews on a string of pearls, and an inquisitive baby reaches a tentative finger toward White’s lens.

White said weddings are her favorite occasion to photograph.

“I love capturing each couple’s love for each other,” she said. “And couples are so willing to do anything to get the perfect picture. It is great.”

White works at least five days a week and does her own marketing and product packaging. She is not limited to The County, and often travels to work in other parts of Maine.

The hardest part of being a photographer, she said, is “distinguishing yourself.”

“Now you see more competition from people who have a digital camera and are trying to make a go of it,” she said. “I also didn’t go to high school in this area, so it is harder to get people to contact me to take senior portraits. But my clients have been very good to me, and they are always mentioning my name to other people. I get a lot of business that way. I really do have a great job.”

I love having the girls pictures done by Sam, she is an amazing photographer and I will never go back to a studio to have any pictures done!

You will rarely find another photographer with more enthusiasm for her work. She provides excellent customer service and her pictures are very reasonably priced for the superb quality.

I love Samantha Marie, always looking for a reason to use her. Hoping she’ll make the treck out of state when I do things like get married and have a child, hopefully I can afford her travel because I wouldn’t have anyone else catch such special events

I checked out Samantha’s photos online. They are beautiful. She definitely has talent and is a nice person from what I have heard from mutual friends. I hope she has a long and wonderfully successful career!

Have you actually looked at her images? They’re average at best, many are out of focus and her composition leaves quite a bit to be desired. I’m not sure who she knows at BDN but there are many FAR more talented self-taught photographers in the state, let alone this area, that are more deserving of recognition. Why the story on this one in particular?

I can only guess as to why you would feel the need to post something like this. What a horrible existence you must live in order to write this. I’m saddened for you.

I’m sorry you feel that way. The fact of the matter is she is exactly one of those photographers ”
who have a digital camera and are trying to make a go of it.” She must be extremely good at marketing because that is what has separated her. Not her images.

I agree with the person who commented on your previous post. Really, you feel the need to take time out of your (unbusy) day to put her down? It’s a shame. I’ve watched Sam grow over the years, and although her photography isn’t perfect (because no one is perfect), it has grown by leaps and bounds. She has learned this ALL by herself and has worked very hard to get where she is. I’m very proud of her and her work…and perhaps if you don’t like it, you can just keep quiet…because after all, if you’re going to criticize, you should at least make it constructive. I haven’t heard any suggestions from you on how to IMPROVE the photos…you’ve just mentioned negative things.

    How to improve
    Samantha M. White’s photos:
    1. Practice proper focusing. She can also read her camera manual to see the different types of focusing features her gear offers.2. Study composition. A LOT of her photos have very busy backgrounds that are totally unrelated to the image.
    3. Purchase better lenses. Judging from her images, she could use a lens with a larger aperture to be able to separate her subjects from the background.

Personal attacks are petty and childish. My only negative statement was that the BDN has the opportunity to publish articles about ANY photographer in the area that have worked hard and studied for many years. They are not perfect either by any means but many of them have dedicated their lives to their craft. Why not feature them?

I attempted to request Samantha as my photographer for my summer wedding last year, with no luck as it is a very busy season for photographers. Her photos are beautiful, she has passion for her work and she was very helpful in trying to assist me in finding a suitable replacement. Another great artist from the area (who I did have the pleasure of capturing my wedding moments) is Photography by Mandy. I was her very first wedding venue and I must say, the photos were amazing!

It is great to see the BDN showcasing some of the areas up-and-coming entreprenuers!

Not going to go into any of the back and forth garbage that’s being posted on this. But I will say this, talent, goals, quality aside…the thing that sets this young lady apart from any would be photographer (as talented as they may be) is her heart.
The fact is, she wouldnt be under the comment threads posting hurtful garbage, she would be out taking the amazing pictures that got the attention of the BDN, in the first place.

    I’m not her, however.
To the folks posting negative propoganda, with expensive cameras sitting next to unfulfilled dreams, and unrealized potential in their laps. Get a life.
    She did.

dear Mr Gruest…ahem. did i say Gruest? Dear Mr Grast…oop. sorry. Dear Mr Guest, i’m sure you’re pictures are lovely. Nice ad.

Steps one, two, and three, sound like a perfect resume for WalMart Portrait Studios. McDonalds has a cheeseburger, and looking at numbers, marketing costs, advertisement, and revenue, and how many units sold, it is probably the most well known and most overall consumed burger in the world. Doesnt make it the tastiest. The best burger ever, belongs to a once upon a time restaurant in Caribou that had Harleys all through it. There was an individuality and personality to the place and it’s food that made it remarkable. People that follow instructions and ingredients to the letter, make franchises. People that follow their love for their work and their customers and their passions, make friends, memories, and history.
