NORTHPORT, Maine — Last weekend students fiddled the night away. This weekend their teachers will perform at the Blue Goose to raise money for scholarships to Maine Fiddle Camp in Montville.

The Maine Master Fiddlers Showcase and Contradance lineup on Saturday includes the Belfast Bay Fiddlers, the Pineland Fiddlers, Maximum Blue, Jennifer Armstrong, Frank Ferrell, Jeff McKeen and at least seven other performers.

“For anybody interested in traditional Maine music, these are the people who are keeping that tradition alive,” Rick Fitzsimmons, a fiddler with Belfast Bay Fiddlers, said Thursday. “These are some very talented musicians.”

The Waldo County showcase has been held for about five years, according to Barry Crawford of Monroe. He is planning an event this fall in Hancock County similar to the one in Bangor on April 30, which featured Maine Fiddle Camp campers.

“It used to be that people would get together in kitchens and living rooms to play, and that’s how this music lived,” Jeffrey Silverstein, a Bangor attorney who is part of the duo Maximum Blue with his 14-year-old son Max Silverstein, said last month. “That’s not happening in this hyperscheduled age.”

Around the state, fiddle jam sessions have been organized by amateur musicians who have attended fiddle camp. One of their goals is to bring together a multigenerational group to play traditional music in sessions similar to those held each summer night at camp, according to Jeff Silverstein, who organized Penobscot Fiddles last year.

Maine Fiddle Camp is held in June and August at Camp NEOFA, owned by the North East Odd Fellows Association.

The Master Fiddlers Showcase will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with the Belfast By Fiddlers performing. The Master Fiddlers will perform at 7 p.m. at the Blue Goose, U.S. Route 1, Belfast. A contradance will begin at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person or $30 for a family of four or more.
