BANGOR, Maine — A local chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing has given St. Joseph Healthcare President and CEO Sister Mary Norberta two honors, presenting her with the Lifetime Achievement Award and naming a scholarship in her honor.

The Omicron Xi Chapter-at-Large Lifetime Achievement Leadership Award was presented to Sister Norberta for her outstanding lifelong commitment to nursing leadership and education at the local, state and federal levels. The honor was presented during the group’s annual induction ceremony for new members in April, when Sister Norberta, a member of the Felician Sisters, also was the keynote speaker.

Sister Norberta is an outstanding example of what membership in Sigma Theta Tau International represents, said registered nurse Valerie C. Sauda, president of the Omicron Xi Chapter-at-Large board. The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, one of the largest international nursing organizations, works to foster, develop and connect nurse scholars and leaders worldwide to improve health care. Sauda said that Sister Norberta’s lifelong personal commitment to education and professional development serves as an excellent role model for new and practicing nurses in the chapter.

In addition, to honor Sister Norberta as she prepares to step down from her leadership position at St. Joseph Healthcare this year, the chapter board has created an annual scholarship in her name to be presented to an active chapter member who shows leadership and a commitment to lifelong learning.

The first recipient of the Sister Mary Norberta Continuing Education and Leadership Scholarship is registered nurse Amy Cotton, director of operations at Rosscare. Cotton plans to pursue an interdisciplinary doctorate at the University of Maine.

Sister Norberta has been an Honor Society of Nursing member since 1998. She has led St. Joseph Healthcare for 29 years, and will step down as president and CEO this year to pursue new opportunities.
