Albion man charged in trash can fire at Troy home

TROY, Maine — An Albion man was arrested late last week for allegedly setting a fire in a trash can in the bathroom of a home he had been visiting in Troy in February.

Benjamin E. Proctor, Jr., 21, had been asked to leave the home on the evening of Feb. 10 because he was being belligerent, according to Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Robert Keating.

Proctor used the restroom, and when he came out, other people in the home could smell smoke. One man said he found “quite a blaze” in the trash can, Keating said.

Proctor left the home, but police were called later in the evening with a report that Proctor was lying in the road. Originally officials thought he might have been hit by a car, but that did not appear to be the case.

They determined Proctor had suffered a head injury and was treated for his wounds, Keating said.

The trash can fire was reported to the Waldo County District Attorney’s Office, which decided that there was enough evidence to arrest him.

Proctor was arrested and charged with one count of arson on Friday.

He was released on $5,000 cash bail, and his conditions of release include no use or possession of alcohol or incendiaries.
