Humane Society of Knox County welcomes new board member

By Dale McGarrigle, BDN Staff

THOMASTON — The Humane Society of Knox County recently elected Richard Procopio to its board of directors. For the past four years, Procopio has been a member of the volunteer force at the humane society. He has done everything from cleaning cages to walking dogs, setting up events and being a host of the shelter’s local access TV show “Reigning Cats & Dogs.”

“After volunteering at the shelter for four years and seeing how necessary and important it has become to the midcoast community, I felt that by becoming a board member I could help educate the community about the shelter’s role and importance,” said Procopio.

Procopio was an editorial and commercial photographer, published in Down East magazine, Fly Rod & Reel and numerous sporting magazines until his retirement in 2007. He was a photography instructor at Maine Photographic Workshop in Rockport and at the University of Southern Maine and photography department chairman at Western Connecticut State University. He lives in Rockland with his wife, Cheryl Michels, owner of Huston Tuttle, and their adopted shelter cats.
