Scott Pelley taking over for Couric as CBS anchor

CBS says Scott Pelley will take over as its evening news anchor, starting on June 6. The network on Tuesday announced the expected selection of Pelley, the veteran “60 Minutes” reporter, to replace Katie Couric on the “CBS Evening News.” Couric is pursuing a syndicated talk show, but hasn’t said where she will be working next. The date for her final CBS broadcast has not been set. Pelley is a Texas native who has worked at CBS for two decades. He will inherit a broadcast that is in last place in the ratings behind NBC and ABC, and has been for some time. CBS said Pelley will continue to do stories for “60 Minutes.” … President Barack Obama honored Michelle Shearer of Maryland on Tuesday as the 2011 National Teacher of the Year. Shearer teaches chemistry at Urbana High School in Frederick, Md. In a Rose Garden ceremony, Obama said Shearer represents all teachers who are committed to improving their own skills in order to better educate their students. Winners of state teacher of the year awards also joined the president at Tuesday’s ceremony. Obama reiterated his call for Congress to make the No Child Left Behind education law less punitive and more flexible, changes he says would help teachers be more successful in the classroom. … House and Senate leaders dedicated a bronze statue of President Gerald Ford on Tuesday, remembering the former Michigan lawmaker as a man of integrity who helped the nation heal from the Watergate crisis. Ford, the nation’s 38th president, was feted by lawmakers, friends and family members in a ceremony under the soaring dome of the U.S. Capitol. He was credited with providing steady leadership after the resignation of President Richard Nixon, capping a lifetime of public service in the Navy, Congress and ultimately, the White House.
