Ex-Maine guard armory to become movie studio

The Associated Press

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A former Maine National Guard armory in South Portland is going to become a movie and television production studio and the developers hope to be able use it to entice more production companies to make movies in the state.

The South Portland City Council voted unanimously Monday to lease the armory to Fore River Sound Stage.

Fore River Sound Stage’s partners, Eric Matheson and Mark Rockwood, say more than 10 movie production companies scout Maine each year, but few if any major films are shot in Maine because of the lack of a sound stage.

The Portland Press Herald says the armory development provides Matheson and Rockwood with an opportunity make Maine more attractive to motion-picture crews.

The city acquired the armory in 2006.
