BREWER, Maine — A local man was arrested on several charges and warrants Friday afternoon after what police say began as an attempt to shoplift.
Jess Prentice, 29, reportedly tried to leave Paradis Foodliner with a bottle of Canadian Mist, Bacardi 151, a roast beef sandwich, a turkey sandwich and a tube of toothpaste that he had not paid for, Cpl. Steve Boyd, who arrested Prentice, said Monday.
Because Prentice used force in his attempt to get away with the items — he tried to push his way past a group of store employees trying to hold him until police arrived — what would have been a theft charge became a robbery charge, Boyd said.
Boyd additionally charged Prentice with failure to provide his correct name and birth date and felony aggravated forgery after he allegedly lied about his identity and used the bogus information to fill out a summons.
Prentice also was wanted on two active warrants, Boyd said. Information about what the warrants were issued for was not available on Monday.
Boyd said the combined dollar value of the products at issue was about $37. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
