ORONO, Maine — Two teenage boys whose canoe tipped over Monday in the icy Stillwater River managed to pull themselves back into their vessel.
After they were pulled to shore and deemed uninjured, the teens, whose names were not released, were given a lift back to their vehicle, which was parked upriver, Lt. Scott Luciano of the Orono Fire Department said Monday evening.
“The did all the right things,” Luciano said. “They both were wearing life jackets and that made a difference.”
According to Luciano, firefighters and rescue boats from Orono and Old Town were called to assist the pair after a passing motorist spotted them in the Stillwater waving for help after their green canoe capsized about 5:15 p.m.
Luciano said that both departments respond to river emergencies as a matter of protocol.
